To gain an understanding of and an appreciation for the diversity of avifauna that surrounds us in our daily lives. Because birds are active in the day-time and are relatively conspicuous they have been a subject of interest since the earliest days of man and, as a result, much is known about them. Studies of birds have contributed greatly to our understanding of the fundamental principles of biology.
