ENG 361 African-American Literature

What is African American Literature? As a category, does it have to respond to a certain set of historical conditions, or does it more broadly represent any work by African American writers? The course explores a range of representative African American texts in their literary, historical, and cultural contexts. Although different iterations of the course may focus on distinct eras and groups of writers, the course is designed to provide a methodological and critical overview to the study of African American literature.
