Career Services

Career Services provides comprehensive services to assist students throughout the career development process. Services are provided free of charge to all undergraduates, graduate students and alumni of the University. Career Services coordinates an array of programs and services, such as Career Assessments, Career Counseling, Career Seminars/Panels, and Internship & Job Listings. Students also have the opportunity to connect with employers and graduate school recruiters via the Career & Internship Expo, Graduate School Expo, On-Campus Recruiting, Externship Program, and Academic Internship Program. Career Services conducts programs that target the career needs of each class year, from first years to seniors. Additionally, Career Services maintains current listings of local and national career opportunities through the Handshake online database. ACADEMIC INTERNSHIPS

Through the CBU Academic Internship Program, students have access to internship opportunities across the Memphis area.  Theories and formulas learned in the classroom will take on new meaning as they are applied in business, government, education and nonprofit environments.  The Academic Internship Program allows for consistency across campus in: the student application process; employer communication; and data collection.

Academic Internship Guidelines

  • The internship must be related to one or more of the academic departments at CBU.
  • The intern’s work must be project-oriented.  No more than 25% of the work should involve clerical responsibilities (such as faxing, copying, answering phones, cold calling, and filing). The intern must report to a professional staff member.
  • The experience should have a defined beginning, middle, and end, and a developed job description with defined learning objectives/goals related to the student’s professional growth and academic coursework.
  • For healthcare internships, students intern (shadow) approximately 5 hours per week to receive 1 to 2 credit hours. All other internships require 8 to 10 hours per week (up to 20 hours per week for Engineering majors) for 3 credit hours.
  • Academic credit can only be granted during the term in which the internship is completed. Internships can occur during the Fall, Spring and Summer terms.
  • The internship does not require pay in that the student will receive academic credit.  However, the student may receive compensation if the employer elects to pay the intern.  A list of pre-approved nonpaid internship offerings is available for all students.  For paid internships, students may utilize Handshake to search and apply for open positions as they are made available by employers.

 

Internships/Curricular Practical Training for international students. These regulations apply to both undergraduate and graduate students. They do not apply to on-campus internships.

Per USCIS regulations, students holding F1 visas must be authorized for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) before beginning any off-campus internship, whether paid or unpaid. Students must meet the following requirements to apply for CPT:

  1. Have completed one full academic year.
  2. Have secured an internship directly related to their course of study
  3. Have been granted permission to receive course credit for their internship.
