ART 200 Oil Painting I

An introduction to the materials, techniques, and conceptual foundations of oil painting. Students develop technical proficiency in color mixing, paint handling, surface preparation, composition, observational painting, and spatial organization through studio projects and critical analysis. Emphasis is placed on visual problem-solving, historical and contemporary painting practices, and the development of individual creative expression. Studio instruction is supplemented by critiques, demonstrations, readings, and discussions addressing formal, conceptual, and professional practices in painting.

This course requires significant studio production and outside studio work consistent with university credit-hour expectations for studio art instruction.
