An in-depth study of the major authors who shaped English culture from the beginning of the seventeenth century through the English Civil War.  A period marked by contention and uncertainty, the seventeenth century witnessed the development of modern empirical science, early movements for democracy, the solidification of national, racial, and ethnic identities, and constant religious turmoil. The course will place these authors in their historical and intellectual moment, exploring one or more of these themes.
